About this session

When new users arrive at your product, their onboarding experience is the process that's meant to welcome and guide them towards lasting success. But in a team’s quest to address short-term metrics and feature awareness, onboarding often gets condensed into just a front-loaded moment, missing out on its bigger potential.

In this talk, you’ll learn the importance of using guided interaction to create a better onboarding experience. We’ll cover how to fit onboarding into the user journey, why guiding users through interaction is a more effective strategy than front-loaded instruction, and how designing for new users connects to designing a better product overall.

UX Leader at Author of Better Onboarding

Krystal is a lead UX designer who connects the dots between products, systems, and the people who use them. She has more than 15 years of hands-on experience at companies like NVIDIA, eBay, and, currently, Google, where she works on systems design for ChromeOS.

One of the areas she's focused on, and is extremely passionate about, is the onboarding and guidance of new users. She has shared techniques for creating human-centered onboarding experiences with teams around the world through articles, talks, workshops, and her book Better Onboarding. When she’s not working on tech-meets-humans projects, she enjoys painting and scuba diving.
