Trust Me: UX for Privacy

Not only as software moves off screens and more deeply into our physical environments, there are new privacy risks. By exploring short-comings and successful cross-platform experiences from a security point of view, this talk describes ways designers and developers can partner to create User Experiences people trust. From messaging apps and chatbots, to connected homes, to drones, this an exciting era for UX design, and as a community we're up to the challenge of privacy preservation.

Ame (sounds like 'Amy') Elliott is Design Director for Simply Secure, a nonprofit service organization dedicated to making ubiquitous privacy and security a reality. She uses a Human-Centered Design approach to the challenges of privacy and forges relationships with multidisciplinary teams of software engineers, UX researchers, UX designers, users, and other collaborators.

Previously, Ame spent eight years in San Francisco at innovation consultancy IDEO where she oversaw the Design Research community, cultivating research excellence by the thirty practitioners across two California locations. At IDEO, Ame was a senior Project Leader, delivering technology strategy work to Global 500 clients including Acer, AT&T, Ericsson, Fuji-Xerox, Gannett, HP, and Samsung.

Ame is a passionate teacher of Human-Centered Design and Design Thinking. She advises startups to be more user-centered and works with the fellows of the Open Technology Fund’s Secure Usability Fellowship. She led the IDEO team that created the Innovator’s Accelerator, an online social learning platform taught by Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School, Hal Gregersen of INSEAD, and Jeffrey Dyer of Brigham Young University. She has taught courses at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Colorado, Boulder.

She earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley for her work developing hybrid physical-digital interactions to support the architectural design process and a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University Colorado, Boulder. She holds 8 U.S. patents, and is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications, including a chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Internet Psychology.
